Christopher Columbus – Hero or Villain?

Christopher Columbus , that Portuguese explorer who is credited with discovering America, is a person that elicits very different images depending on where you come from. To some, he is the very epitome of an intrepid explorer and a hero of the Spanish people, but to others, he is the person responsible for the decimation of the indigenous peoples of South America. So who is he? Early life According to International Inside , Columbus was born in the middle of the 15th Century to a wool merchant, Domenico Colombo, and his wife, Susanna Fontanarossa. He had brothers, Giovanni Pellegrino, Bartolomeo, and Giacomo and a sister named Bianchinetta. History is a dynamic thing. One generation takes something as gospel truth while the next reject it completely. Sometimes new facts arise to shed light on an aspect of someone’s character. What is considered moral or immoral may change over time? Christopher Columbus facts  is a case in the dynamics of history-altering our perceptions of a person. At one time, Columbus was considered a great explorer who discovered the “New World” and opened it to trade. Now he’s generally viewed as a cruel tyrant who enslaved and sold thousands of people while directly leading to the deaths of thousands more. Not much is known about Christopher Columbus’s early life. He is believed to have been born in Genoa to a Christian household, but it has been alleged that he was a convert from Judaism or that he was born in Spain or Portugal. Columbus became a famous Italian explorer, navigator, and colonist on behalf of the Spanish crown, who is accredited with “discovering” the “New World” of the Americas. He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean four times on behalf of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Aragon, Castile, and Leon in Spain. His voyages brought many hundreds of years of interaction and influence between the “Old World” of Europe and the Americas and the colonization of the Americas by Europeans.
